As a returning player after decades of little playing and not being satisfied with the results from my current mouthpiece, I was in the search of a new one so I contacted Stomvi to inquire about their flex mouthpiece. After an unhurried conversation with KO where he asked many questions about my playing needs and what results I was looking for in a mouthpiece, he recommended the 3 FVR with a 4, 4.5, and 5 coupler. A few days later I received the mouthpiece in the mail. (Let me say that I had been playing a custom mouthpiece which had promised to be my “holy grail” however I was not at all happy with my progress.) I can enthusiastically declare that from the first time I played with the 3 FVR Flex mouthpiece, my playing took a leap ahead at least one year from my current state of progress! Needless to say, I was thrilled then and I am still pleased with this wonderful mouthpiece. Also, I play multiple trumpets by manufacturer and key and having the couplers really help out in fine tuning the gap in each which makes a world of difference in my playing. Thank you to all the staff at Stomvi for always patiently answering my questions. I must also add that it is always a pleasure to be able to talk with the developer and the maker of these fine mouthpieces. You can’t say that about very many mouthpiece makers.

I am impressed. I can’t believe that after almost 50 years on a Bach 3C, I am switching mouthpieces! Because I play a little on the dark side, the 3 FVR Vs gives me just enough edge to make up the difference. I am totally impressed with the comfort of the rim, the “bullseye” slotting and the quick, full, easy response that the Flex mouthpiece delivers. Until I played a Flex mouthpiece, I’ve not been able to find a mouthpiece with a rim that felt like my old Bach 3C. This m/piece is terrific! Thanks!

For over thirty years I’ve been playing mouthpieces in a series from a very respected and popular company. They have been comfortable and I wasn’t planning to make any changes, at least until I played on a Christmas program with a trumpeter who had a Stomvi Flex 3FVR/J6 mouthpiece. After a grueling rehearsal, she let me try it, and in spite of my fatigue, I did a three-octave arpeggio up to double C and back down all the way to pedal C almost effortlessly. I knew then that I’d have to free up some cash to check it out further. I bought a used 3GVR/VS off of eBay, mostly on impulse because it was a good deal, and played it for a couple of weeks before ordering a 3FVR/J6 from K.O.
Now that the honeymoon period is over, here’s what I’ve learned. The 3GVR has a lot of bite and sizzle in the sound, but at first I struggled to hit my regular high range because I was overblowing it. It’s not built to be played that way and doesn’t need to be played that way. One of the things I realized is just how much pressure I’ve been using on my old pieces, which have a slightly softer bite to the rim. Now I’m backing off and the high register is starting to open up. When I received the 3FVR/J6, I A-B’d it against my former piece that had similar cup dimensions, and it was no contest. After three weeks on my Stomvi pieces I will never go back. I will probably use the 3FVR more than the 3GVR simply because it is more versatile–I have the same range on both pieces, but on the 3FVR I can get any color of sound I want from smokey to sizzling. I’m not a lead player, but the 3GVR will come in handy when I need a really crisp cutting sound up high.
The couplers are fascinating–I have the 3.5, 4, 4.5, 5, and 5.5 (a 4.5 came with each piece so I have two). It amazes me how much changing the gap 1/32″ affects the feel and sound. I settled on the 4.5 for both pieces, as they seem to match my Bach trumpet better than the others overall, though there are things I like about all of them.
My wife, who has been listening to me for 25 years and has learned to tune me out, commented that I sound better, and this was when she was at the other end of the house away from my studio. The thing I have noticed more than anything is that now I have more core, more brilliance, more focus, and though I’m not playing any louder and not working as hard, there is more carrying power.
Selling my old mouthpieces on eBay has covered the cost of the Stomvi mouthpieces and I’m now saving to buy Flex mouthpieces for my cornet and flugelhorn. Hopefully down the road there will be a Stomvi trumpet in my bag as well. Great work, guys!
